Double Crochet Stitch ~ Learn to Crochet

We continue our learn to crochet series today with the Double Crochet Stitch.

Learn to Crochet #howto #crochet

This is another common stitch that is used in many crochet patterns.  I like to use a double crochet stitch rather than a single crochet stitch because with double crochet my project is often done faster than with single crochet.  Double crochet is a “taller” stitch that is not as compact as single crochet.  Clear as mud?  ha ha Here we go…

Lets continue where we left off at finishing a row of single crochet stitches.  Now we are going to build a row of double crochet stitches.  To start we need to build the height for a double crochet stitch by creating a chain of two stitches.  If we skipped this part our work would look pinched at the ends and not flat and smooth.

Yarn over.  We always begin a double crochet stitch with two pieces of yarn over our hook.  The loop from our chain and a yarn over.

Now we have three loops of yarn on our hook.

Pull through two loops so that you end with only one loop of yarn on the hook.
The little ditty that we try to remember in class goes like this:
yarn over, poke, yarn over, pull through, yarn over, pull through two, yarn over, pull through two.

Continue to double crochet down the row.  Continue this stitch back and forth for ten rows and you have made yourself a tiny little wash cloth!  Seriously though practise truly does make perfect so practise the last few stitches a many times as you can before tackling your first pattern.

This Coffee Cozy pattern is a great beginner project!
