Front or Back Loop Only Stitch ~ Learn To Crochet

Hey everyone!
Learn to crochet #howto #crochet
Today we are going to explore the front and back loop only crochet stitch.  This is another simple stitch that adds a different look or texture to a crochet project.  There is a gorgeous Seafarer Blanket on my Crochet Like a Ninja board that uses this stitch.  Check it out and you will be inspired to try it ~ I promise!

First lets identify our crochet stitch.  Looking at the top of the work each stitch is created with a loop of yarn.

A traditional crochet stitch is worked in under the two pieces of yarn that create a stitch {shown above}.

When creating a front loop only stitch the hook is only poked through the front loop {one piece of yarn} of the foundation stitch.

When creating a back loop only stitch the hook is only poked through the back loop {one piece of yarn} of the foundation stitch.

A row of back loop only crochet will create a ridge along the row or round.  It creates a lovely pattern and the possibilities are really endless.
Here is an example of a back loop only crochet beanie.

Check out the video of front and back loop crochet to see this stitch in action.  {I have no idea why it cuts out at the end ~ but you get the jist right?} 😉
