Apple Cinnamon Ornaments

Apple Cinnamon OrnamentsIf there is one craft or project that I have fallen in love with this season, it is THIS one.
My aunt used to make these Apple Cinnamon Ornaments with my cousins when they were little so I knew that I had to give them a try with our kids!
Apple Cinnamon Ornaments
These ornaments are very easy to make.
They smell divine.
And look gorgeous attached to just about anything!
You will need:
1 cup of applesauce
1.5 cups of cinnamon
Cookie cutters
Bamboo skewer
Bakers twine
Parchment paper
Slowly add the cinnamon to the applesauce until the mixture resembles play dough or sugar cookie dough.  Use cinnamon like you would flour when rolling out cookie dough.  Dust your work surface and rolling pin with cinnamon.  Roll out the apple cinnamon dough about 1/4 inch thick.  Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes and skewer to poke a hole in each ornament.  Line two baking sheets with parchment paper and bake in a 200° oven for 1.5 hours.
Look for cinnamon in the dollar store or bulk section of the grocery store
Use small 1.5 inch cookie cutters for little ornaments that can be used to accent almost anything
To dry?  Add more applesauce
To wet?  Add more cinnamon
These do not rise or expand and be placed very close together on the cookie sheet
Use cheap apple sauce and cinnamon as no one will be eating these {we hope}
Here’s what our ornament making looked like…
Apple Cinnamon Ornaments Isaiah always enjoys mixing it up in the kitchen.  We used our Kitchen Aid mixer on the lowest setting.
Worked like a charm.
Apple Cinnamon Ornaments Of course he had to test out how edible these could be {not so good ~ trust us!}
Apple Cinnamon Ornaments We mixed it up.
Apple Cinnamon Ornaments Rolled it out.
Apple Cinnamon OrnamentsAnd began cutting out shapes.
I found these cute cookie cutters at Homesense.
Apple Cinnamon Ornaments Isaiah said that this was his favorite part.
Apple Cinnamon Ornaments We poked a hole in each one, then threw them into the oven.
The house smelled wonderful the entire day!
Apple Cinnamon Ornaments One batch of dough makes a TON of ornaments!
Apple Cinnamon Ornaments Seriously, how pretty are these?!
And they smell great!
Apple Cinnamon Ornaments We are using our Apple Cinnamon Ornaments as part of our Random Acts of Kindness advent calendar ~ the boys are giving them out to people they meet saying, “Ho! Ho! Ho! Merry Christmas!”
Apple Cinnamon Ornaments
I have also been using them:
on brown paper bags for a Christmas cookie exchange
as ornaments on the boys’ mini Christmas trees
to embellish signage on my craft fair table
with plans to add them to Christmas gift packages
I hope that you’ll give these a try ~ maybe you will fall in love too?!

was thinking about these not too long ago and had no idea how they were made. I have a santa shaped one from long long ago from my girl scout days. Might have to do these with the nephews 🙂 Thanks for sharing!

    What a great idea.
Did these with my daycare kids, and the dough was so easy to work with, even for small hands.
Now the house has a cinnamon smell all over, wonder if I’ll ever get rid of the cinnamon dust in my nose 😉
    Thanks for sharing!
