How to Start Geocaching

We love to go Geocaching. Especially in the spring when the weather warms up and we can really get out to explore our local parks.  Geocaching is essentially a high tech treasure hunt using a GPS enabled device.  Check out the website and my other posts for more information. Seriously you should go ~ it’s affordable family fun and can be done all over the world!!
Today I’m going to show you how to start goecaching.  I’m going to lead you step-by-step through the process of navigating through geocaching.com to your first geocache.  Click on the photos for a larger view of each screen shot.

Begin by going to www.geocaching.com.
There you will need to fill out the online membership form and sign in {a basic membership is free}.

Now figure out where you are going.  Are you headed to a local park?  To a playground?  Near a local attraction?  We’re planning a trip to Prince George for Easter.  We are headed to the Exploration Place {a Museum} which is near a park that might be fun to have lunch at.  I googled the museum and found the postal {zip} code and copied it.

Go back to www.geocaching.com and hover over the drop down menu, Play.  Click on Hide & Seek a Cache.

There are a number of different ways to seek a cache.  You may use your own address or that of a particular destination.  In this case I pasted our postal code into the by Postal Code box and clicked on the Go button.

That brings us to a page listing a ton of geocaches, starting with the closest to our address.  Click on the name of the first one.  In this picture it would be “EDAK-RAP”.

From there you are taken to that specific cache page.  The easiest way to find and see caches that are even more specific to your desired location is to now scroll down this page until you see an image of a map that says view larger map above it.  {It is usually the second map}.  Click on view larger image.

Now you have a map that shows each and every geocache in your specified area.  You can hover over each cache icon to get more detailed information.

Zoom in on your location, hover over your desired cache and click on the cache name.  In this case it was “It’s just a roll through the park”.

Clicking on the cache name will bring you to this page where you can gather all sorts of information about this specific cache.  Most importantly you need to input the coordinates {N 53 54.323 W 122 44.236} into your GPS or GPS enabled device.
That’s all I have for you today.  My next geocaching post will include how I send this information to my iPhone and how I input the cache coordinates into our Garmin GPS.  See you soon!
