Quilted Keepsake Pillow

Hi y’all!
Here’s my submission for week one of
One Month To Win It.

I came up with this idea for our
Preserve a Memory
challenge rather quickly.
And love, love, love the way it turned out!
Here’s the tutorial as promised:

Using a 12 month sized hoodie, a couple of 24 month sized onsies and a size 3 toddler t-shirt I made this Quilted Keepsake Pillow {say that three times fast}.

 Cut 6″ x 1 1/2″ strips of fabric.
4 strips each of four different materials.

Sew the strips together using a 1/4″ seam and pattern shown above.

Iron all of the seams flat.

Now cut your fabric again into 1 1/2″ strips.  This time cut horizontally to your sewn together strips.

You will end up with strips that look like they have squares of fabric.

Lie your strips down and stagger them to create a pattern that is pleasing to your eye.
Once you create a pattern some strips may be longer than others and your pattern may not be square {see top right of photo}.

Using a seam ripper, cut and place fabric squares where needed.

Here I have moved a dark blue square and a striped dark blue square from the bottom of that strip to the top.

Now sew the squares that you’ve moved, back onto their strip of fabric.

Sew all of the strips of fabric together using a 1/4″ seam.

 Iron down your seams.

 Now cut a 2 1/2″ inch border.  My patterned section measured 16″ so I had three 2 1/2″ x 18 1/2″ and one 2 1/2″ x 16 1/2″ pieces cut for the border.  Sew together using a 1/4″ seam.

 Pin to your batting.

Sew pillow front onto batting.  I sewed a zig zag pattern between my two dark blue pieces of fabric.

Pin the back of your pillow to the front {right sides together} and sew them together.
While my pillow backing was unique you could simply use a piece of coordinating fabric 20″ x 20″.
Stuff pillow and you’re done!
And finally the whole photo montage.

Thanks for following along and voting!
Stay tuned for more fabulous projects ~ voting starts again on Monday!

Loved this idea! Thank you so much for the post Heather!
Recently featured this on my blog Kidelation in my article entitled “8 Adorable Memory Books and Projects You Can Make for your Kids!” I mentioned in my post that it would be cool to use the zipper area as a storage pouch. Awesome for keeping little things altogether during travel! Great for a plane!
