Volcano Building with the Deadliest Volcanoes on Netflix

Volcano Building with Netflix

The boys and I have been having tons of fun creating after school activities this month.  They are starting to expect all sorts of epic arts and crafts every time they come home!  It all started with this awesome volcano experiment that we did to celebrate our love of science and the Deadliest Volcanoes on Netflix!

Volcano Building with Netflix

We began by gathering up our supplies.  We used a mason jar (painted brown) as our “mountain”.  This worked perfectly to hold all of the ingredients needed to create a volcanic eruption.

mason jar

warm water

red food coloring

baking soda

dish soap

1. Fill the mason jar 3/4 full with warm water.

2. Add 10 drops of red food colouring, 6 drops of dish soap and 2 Tbsp of baking soda.

3. Place the mason jar in a tray or pan to catch the overflow.

4. Poor in 1 cup of vinegar and watch the magic happen!

Volcano Experiment

I highly recommend doing this experiment before watching Deadliest Volcanoes!  Our boys LOVED seeing the volcanic reaction in real-life and comparing it to the eruptions on screen when we watched the show afterward.  We had lots of great discussion and interactive reasoning.  I love combining these kind of activities with great science-based programming!

Have your kids built a home made volcano?  How did it go?
